Walkie stacker licence?

A walkie stacker does not require the operator to be licensed since a walkie stacker is not categorised a high risk work machine. Though there are many similarities to a forklift truck, the operator walks along with the machine rather than occupying a driver seat position to operate it.

Walkies stackers are often called walk behind stackers. This is a misnomer in some ways because the safest way to operate a walkie stacker is to walk in front of it and to the side. The practice of walking behind the machine should be kept to a minimum. When doing so, the operator has limited vision and the steering function can become erratic.

Modern walkie stackers are becoming more common in recent years as they have become easier to operate with more features such as power steering, mast tilt and side shift capabilities. Some machines are able to be used in four directions making them ideal for shifting long loads through narrow doorways and along narrow pathways.

There are many instances where a walkie stacker is a better option over a forklift truck. A walkie stacker generally has lower capital and maintenance costs and staff do not require a high risk work licence to operate them.

Though a licence is not required, it is important that walkie stacker operators receive quality training to meet an employer’s duty of care expectations towards maintaining a safe workplace.

Onsite Forklift Licencing provides a comprehensive training program for walkie stacker operators. Full documentation is provided with a certificate stating Verification of Competence (VOC) to successful candidates. Training is conducted by professional trainers with practical experience.
